Pilates helped strengthen my lower back and taught me how to safely engage my abdominal muscles throughout my pregnancy. It has also helped me strengthen my pelvic floor muscles before and especially after pregnancy, which was essential and greatly beneficial.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring of 2000, when I was 48. After my treatment, I wanted to find exercise classes that would help me regain strength and balance. When I discovered Pilates, Gyrokinesis® and Gyrotonic® classes, I realized the emphasis on form and core strength was perfect for my needs. All the teachers at Harmony have been very helpful, challenging me, yet always conscious of my concerns. And now that I’ve regained my strength, I’m able to explore other activities, such as kayaking and ballet classes. And last spring, I celebrated my five-year anniversary by completing the two-day Avon Walk. Harmony has been a significant part of my recovery.

I have been a Harmony client for the past few years. After giving birth to my second child, I was looking for a complete exercise that offered muscle toning and strengthening. I was also looking for a workout that didn’t feel repetitive and boring. Pilates and the instructors at Harmony not only helped me to get rid of the baby weight, but now I am more toned and more flexible than I have ever been. I started Pilates, reluctantly, at the insistence of my wife. It will be good for you, she said. It builds core strength, I was told. I promised to give it a try. How hard could it be, I thought. You lay down for most of the exercises- just my speed. Light weights, few reps.
I arrogantly arrived for my first lesson. I was not prepared to talk about such intimate topics as my pelvic floor, sitz bones, or zipping up my abs. Regardless, I was ready for this “light” workout. Then Tara asked me to do a 100 count sustained crunch. My body shook; my stomach ached; I begged for mercy! The woman next to me did not even break a sweat. So much for easy.
Now five months later, “hundreds” are just part of the routine. I have the flexibility to touch my toes again. Slowly the “love handles” are disappearing. My stomach is flatter. My posture is better. I have more strength for playing the human jungle gym with my 5 and 8 year olds. I am hoping my new “core strength” will improve my golf game this summer.
I am no longer embarrassed when I tell friends that I am off to pilates class. If they continue to poke fun, I make them do a 100 count sustained crunch. Let’s see whose laughing then.
Most of Harmony’s clients and instructors look young, beautiful, and perfect to us. We don’t look like them…yet! My husband (78) and I (71) are not only old but a trifle paunchy. But we love our instructors. They treat us kindly and professionally, with no patronization. They identify our “imperfections” and provide very specific exercises to make us limber and functional. I think my husband likes Harmony as much as golf…and that’s saying a mouthful. Thanks, Harmony!

I have been participating in Pilates for the past 3 years, but truly became dedicated to the routine during the past 18 months at Harmony. The variety of the classes and the wide range of times, have made it easy to incorporate Pilates into my life.
